Contraction is a shortened form of one or two words (one of which is usually a verb). In contractions, the apostrophe takes the place of the missing letter or letters. Some contraction: I (i) can not (can not), how this (how), and Ms (Mother).
For example, "not" is a contraction which is short for "no"; quotes in the "no" takes the place of the "o" is missing. Another example is the "hit," contraction "clock." A less common example of contraction is "jack-o'-lantern," an abbreviation of "jack-of-lantern"; in it, the apostrophe takes the place of the "f" is missing in "from."
